Moondance

Nova is a witch who rewrites the world formula to manifest her magic. She can't read it fluently or easily, and it's taken years of extensive study for her to be able to manipulate and perform what little magic she can. An independent contractor of sorts, she works as an arcane apothecary crafting spells, charms, potions, and other similar items for the locals, typically of the medicinal or healing variety. She also has the ability to concoct elementally infused items and remedies, but the demand is few and far between and her technique requires further study and refinement. She's hardly subtle regarding her distaste for the Chasseurs, a religious organization dedicated to eradicating vampires and their sinful, abnormal existence from the world. Despite this, she's formed a rather significant acquaintance with two top members of said organization, Roland and Olivier. They exchange items for information with her, and more often than not she'll find them dragging themselves to her doorstep after a botched mission seeking treatment...and of course, she's not so heartless as to turn them away. Not to mention she and Roland kind of grew up together. Who’s to say what their entangled futures hold?Due to the nature of her work (and her affinity for vampires, which she avoids mentioning in polite society to the best of her ability) she prefers that her existence not be advertised or spread around, and she doesn't generally enjoy surprise visits to her workshop. That is until one fateful day when Roland and Olivier turn up with a peculiar party and an even more puzzling predicament of their own...and even a vampire or two in tow.Ship Tag

Charisma and Chaos

(Note: no reference art is available at this time because Horst is a character from a book and doesn't have any official artwork. However, I am partial to this piece and tend to use it as my visual standard for the Cabal brothers.)
_____
Nova is a member of the witch coven more formally known by their official title, the Daughters of Hecate. She and her close covenmate, Melkorka, have a history of collaborating with the Cabal brothers (which in truth only involves a single instance where they were sent as representatives of their coven) and they seek out the brothers' assistance once again, no matter how unwisely, with the intent to secure their help in dealing with another coven who’s devious deeds have started circulating through the general coven grapevine.Although it may seem strange that the witches didn't choose to tackle this issue with the help of their own covenmates or by attempting to form an alliance with any others, the real reason they've been driven to seek the brothers out stems from the fear that the Emissaries of Eris, the coven who's questionable deeds Nova and Melkorka hope to foil, would find out and either accelerate their plans or try to fight before any other covens were prepared to face them. The Emissaries of Eris, much like their namesake, desire to unleash a unique kind of chaos into the world. They’re searching for Pandora’s Box with the intent of utilizing the ancient artifact’s power for their own ends. According to legend, there’s a form of hope still trapped in the Box (or, more accurately, jar) the nature of which is unknown, but the potential of which could be incredible, even unstoppable. As far as any of the other covens know, the Box has not yet been retrieved, so there’s still time for some form of intervention to prevent further calamity.Horst Cabal and Nova Astrafel remember each other from the brief introduction they had some time ago, at least a couple of years by this point, but they didn’t do much more than exchange pleasantries at the time. Now, it seems that they’re going to be sent into enemy territory to do the legwork for their part of the expedition. After managing to convince Johannes (and Horst, but he was more likely to help to begin with) to assist the witches in their potentially fruitless and definitely risky endeavor, it’s decided that someone needs to infiltrate the Emissaries firsthand in order to gather more intel, and also keep an eye on how their plan’s developing. Perhaps it would be easier, and undeniably safer, to attempt to spy on them using other supernatural and magical means, but the likelihood that they would have measures in place to prevent that kind of snooping is considerably high, so that point is kind of moot.Whether they want to or not, Horst and Nova are sent off on this little escapade all on their own. Although Nova is in a fairly advantageous position with her knowledge and experience regarding not just her coven, but covens in general, and how these kinds of things work, what etiquette is expected, how she should act and engage with people etc etc, Horst has none of that and also isn’t a fully fledged vampire, per say. In order to make their charade convincing, they’ll both have to put in a little more effort than usual. Horst has to go back to pretending he can’t be up during the day, has to regularly drink more blood, and has to hope that none of the other vampires or various supernatural entities that the Emissaries have at their disposal are keen enough to notice that he’s hiding something. Luckily, he has enough experience to fake it for a little bit, he just has to be cognizant of his role for the duration of the mission. The premise they try to sell is that Nova is a witch who wants to join the Emissaries and lend them her strength, which isn’t all that suspicious on the surface, and Horst is a vampire bodyguard she hired to accompany her. Nova knows that the Emissaries are looking for more supernatural creatures to recruit, because the more the merrier, and the greater power they’ll have on their side when the inevitable fight and perhaps even war their actions trigger ensues. Everything goes mostly to plan at first, but as with most things, there're also plenty of opportunities for shenanigans to crop up.

Inkheart

Nova Astrafel is a young witch who grew up in the Lunar Hamlet: a small, secluded village that somehow managed to exist beyond the prying gazes of the Great Hall and the Three Wise that have kept a tight leash on witch society at large for many years. The surrounding forest is home to a few well kept Silverwood trees that provide the resources necessary for conjuring ink and to suit the citizens’ various magical needs. The practice of magic was widespread among the population of this serene little settlement; that peace was unfortunately not destined to remain undiscovered or undisturbed. Magical practitioners within the Hamlet kept the secret of sorcery just as witch society does, only permitting the secrets to be learned and shared between the local population. Nova discovered a proclivity for both water magic and healing disciplines from an early age, and for most witches living outside the Hamlet, this would have spelled certain doom.Luckily for Nova, her practice was condoned and she developed her methods to suit her specific needs and strengths. Rather than applying magical glyphs and sigils directly to injuries, Nova draws her healing glyphs nested within water glyphs. As a result, she is able to apply healing magic to the body through the medium of water, and although the magic still has to make contact with and alter the body, she has found this method to be less invasive and less prone to extreme error in most cases compared to more traditional forms of healing magic. She also took it upon herself to permanently alter her own appearance by imbuing her skin with transformation glyphs, drawn with invisible ink, that only her eyes are truly able to discern and translate in full. Rather than transforming her entire body, the only legitimate alterations to her physical state involve her ears and tail. The starlight that lingers in her appearance is a side effect of her specific brand of magic, which almost always gives off starlight in one aspect or another--a trademark of her casting. In order to live safely and avoid garnering any unwanted attention at Qifrey's atelier or in witch society at large, she dons a cloak similar to the mirror cloak of borrowshade that allows witches to temporarily disguise themselves as nearby creatures. Her cloak is imbued with a different kind of glyph that, when combined with her preexisting alteration glyphs, changes her appearance into that of a small, fluffy, sparkly black cat. For all intents and purposes she is a cat in this form, it alters her size and abilities, but if the glyph is damaged in any way or if the cloak is removed, the illusion/transformation is undone.Despite their best efforts to remain undetected, news of the Hamlet and their forbidden practices eventually ended up in the hands of the Knights Moralis. They mobilized in an instant, descending on the Hamlet and demanding that every citizen submit for mandatory memory erasure as the entire settlement was burnt to the ground around them.In a word, it was chaos. Somehow, Nova managed to flee with her life and a few sentimental belongings, but she was forced to leave the memories of the peaceful, happy life she once knew behind. Or rather, she was one of the lucky ones that was able to hold onto her memories, the fading vestiges of a once great Lunar Hamlet that was cruelly burned from the face of the earth. An example. A lesson. A tragedy.Ship Tag

Interstellar Intrigue

(No pictures/references available at this time.)
_____
Nova is an alien entity, a resident of the distant “City” that’s been glimpsed by various researchers in the distance of the Black Rock Quarry over the course of their expeditions. Taking matters into her own hands, she decides to investigate the Quarry itself one day and ends up coming into contact with Theodore Ash Jr. as well as a handful of other Bureau personnel. She encountered them soon after they first arrived and began exploring the facility, and their presence may have had a hand in sparking her interest in the first place.Having never interacted with humans before, or really anyone from anywhere beyond the Quarry, she was initially wary of this invasive force, and understandably so. Although she didn’t seem interested in forming any kind of alliance or acquaintance with the Bureau members at large, she formed a fast and significant friendship with Ash during his time researching the Foundation. With the Oldest House practically open to her now, and her expanding curiosity regarding what the presence of this new organization could mean, she spent a lot of time in Ash’s company, helping him with research and exchanging knowledge with him regarding things only they could know from their respective experiences. She isn’t too familiar with the existence of the Board, but she resents their tyrannical authority and the Director that follows their silent orders, carrying out the will of being(s) that make themselves very hard to contact, yet even harder to ignore. She wasn’t a fan of how Northmoor, the Director preceding Trench, treated Ash, or the generally entitled and egotistical nature of his leadership, at least in her eyes. Her trend of distrust and aversion towards Directors persists into Trench’s time after he takes up the mantle of Bureau Director.Following Ash’s disappearance and his replacement as Head of Research by Dr. Caspar Darling, Nova lost contact with her friend only to end up encountering said replacement. She grew a bit suspicious and impatient after not seeing or hearing from Ash for a while, and eventually came to the conclusion that he died or disappeared or was somehow involved in one big Bureau conspiracy or another. What she did not intend on was 1) begrudgingly finding his replacement at least a little bit attractive and 2) getting attached to another human because she’s bored and lonely. Darling happened to be both engaging and persistent enough to win her affection. After making his acquaintance and getting what information she could out of him about what happened to Ash, Nova decides Darling is a suitable new connection to the Bureau. Of course, she can kind of come and go as she pleases, especially because she knows how to avoid most of their surveillance and security measures. But it’s proven both safer and more useful for her to accompany another person into the Oldest House proper for any exploratory needs, and even better if they’re Bureau staff, both due to their marginally more competent grasp of the building and because they’re usually investigating something she’s also curious about.

Glitter and Gold

Nova Astrafel
Rarity: 5 star
Gender: She/her
Element: Hydro
Weapon: Catalyst (canon) ; The Iudex’s Astrolabe (custom BIS) / Scythe (alt)
Focus: Healing and support
Home Region: Fontaine
_____
500 years following the brutal aftermath of the Archon War, Nova was born in Fontaine, the domain of the Hydro Archon, the revered god of judgment. Blessed to receive a Hydro Vision on behalf of the gods, she eventually ascended to godhood, or at least transcended the limitations of mortality to mingle with the gods, obtaining a position that all Vision users have the potential to achieve. She grew closer to the Hydro Archon during this time, and was eventually introduced to the stoic Geo Archon, an individual who she was quite wary to encounter at first.Having grown up hearing plenty of tales, both those native to Fontaine as well as those that trickled in from even the furthest reaches of Teyvat, she'd heard more than enough about the Lord of Geo's fair yet ruthless reputation. Much to her surprise, however, the individual she encountered was not quite the aloof, off putting individual she was expecting. Following this fateful encounter, Nova joined the ranks of the esteemed Adepti and served as a familiar/partner to Zhongli when he was still actively fulfilling his role as Rex Lapis. She stayed by his side for hundreds of years, but was separated from him and fell from Celestia due to unknown causes. She reverted to a temporary state of mortality as a result, and was subsequently recovered and raised from infancy in Fontaine with no memory of her previous life. She retained the Vision she'd once been gifted from the Hydro Archon and formed a close friendship with Mona Megistus, who she has remained in close contact with over the years. Whether or not they crossed paths by fate, or if Mona happens to know more about Nova's past than she lets on, has yet to be revealed. But an even more suspenseful matter is at hand, the question of whether or not Nova will ever manage to find her way back to the Archon that's been waiting nearly three decades for her return...and if she succeeds, just what will be waiting for her there? How much can she do, how much is it all worth, if she fails to recover her memories?Ship Tag

Fate Touched

Nova Astrafel
Race: Faelyne (pronounced fey-line, a homebrew race, combo eldarin/tabaxi heritage)
Class: Astrologian (Homebrew), a priestess of Selune (canon D&D) / Sehanine/Moonweaver (Critical Role) in most contexts
Familiar: Io (starry tressym) and Callisto (starry dirlagraun)
Home Town: Eveningstar, Cormyr and/or Elen’gorn, Mornset Countryside, Tal’dorei (her native planes consist of Arvandor, the Gates of the Moon, and the Fae Realm in general)
Connections: A temporary-turned-permanent ally of Vox Machina (Vax's wife :3c)
_____
Nova Astrafel is an enigma in every sense of the word. A star forged by the hand of Selune herself, the moon goddess was so moved by her creation that she allowed it to fall to the mortal/material plane to experience mortal life, or at least existence. A majority of Nova's upbringing consisted of growing up in the Fae Realm among the many magical and mystical beings that reside there. Selune and Sharess served as her primary caretakers, influencing her form with feline and starlight accents that she grew fond of and chose to retain. She also has the ability to shapeshift into a tressym or dirlagraun at will due to her exposure to and affinity for said creatures, although she hides this ability among people that are unaware of her true identity. The goddesses enabled her to hone her innate magical abilities and facilitated a calm, comforting, pleasant way of life for the fledgling star-turned-faelyne.Unfortunately, peace didn't last. Shar (not to be confused with Sharess) is Selune's twin and sworn enemy. Presiding over Shadowfell and all that lurks within the dimension of shadows and death, there's almost nothing Shar desires more than to see Selune's downfall--even better if it can be orchestrated by her own hand. She became aware of Nova's existence through the pipeline of her followers and hatched a scheme to deal a massive blow to Selune...by stealing her star. And she succeeded. With a combination of her own divine might and the obedient will of her diligent followers, Shar managed to kidnap Nova and keep her imprisoned in the abyss of Shadowfell. Despite Nova's best efforts to escape, she was trapped in Shar's grasp and tortured relentlessly in a variety of ways for an indeterminate amount of time as the dark goddess attempted to break her will. The fracturing star managed to hold out just long enough to be liberated by Selune, but she didn't escape unscathed. The depth of suffering she was forced to endure for years upon years left scars on her very being, her very soul, a darkness that still resides within her to this day. Regardless of the number of treatments and alleged cures she received, the taint was incapable of being cleansed, even by the divine touch of Nova's tender caretakers.Refusing to allow this event to ruin the existence she'd already put forth so much effort to achieve, Nova continues to travel the land as a devout disciple of the Moonmaiden, offering healing and divination to those that desire the blessings of the moon and stars. Her destiny is engraved upon her siblings in the sky just as every fate is woven among them, though looking into her own is a bit too daunting a task for the enterprising fortune teller to face. Lucky for her, one fortuitous encounter is all it takes to set the stiff wheels of fate in motion once more.Ship Tag

Design
I threw some outfits together for Nova on Heroforge; the first two are her standard uniform and a winter outfit. The purple dress is one of her priestess outfits, can be worn to any formal occasion and is occasionally used in official ceremonies and the like. The beads draped around her waist are made of moonstone.

Several hundred years after the events of LOK, Nova is a young waterbender and the latest reincarnation of the waterbending Avatar in the cycle. She has an older sister Kanika (Nika) who is a fantastic soldier, 5 years her senior. Her mother’s name is Kasumi, Chief of the Northern Water Tribe, a descendent of both Eska and Noatuk’s bloodlines. Kanika is next in line to inherit the position. Nova and Nika’s father is a firebender (Hisao) who is in prison for crimes against the nations and his continued support for the Order of Ozai (an underground group of anarchists that long for the return of the Fire Nation and the rest of the world as it was under Ozai’s rule.)Nova has a complex about her firebending; it turns out she can’t do it at all, much like how Korra couldn’t airbend at first. Her father resents her for being a failure and holds even more disdain for her as the Avatar, considering his allegiance. Nova has always been especially adept at both water and airbending, and despite a particularly significant childhood experience with spirits that altered her permanently, is very in tune with the Spirit World. It’s also likely that her affinity was heightened as a result of said experience. She wandered into the Spirit Portal at the North Pole alone when she was very young because she’s always had a strong tie to the spirits and accidentally had one collide with her/pass through her. Even though she’s the Avatar, the energy vs her body and strength of her Avatar spirit still weren’t enough to keep the spirit from giving her an unusual feline appearance. The effect is similar to what happened when people were possessed by spirits back in Wan’s time and their physical forms were subsequently transformed. In this AU this affliction/condition is known colloquially as “spirit blight.”Following Korra, the first earth Avatar had the duty of overseeing the newly liberated Earth Kingdom settlements and managing the extraneous consequences of Kuvira’s regime. The fire Avatar was the first to be born after Roku and the 100 Year War. The air Avatar was the first of the reestablished Air Nation. With all of these absolutely amazing and groundbreaking Avatars and the incredible things they accomplished, Nova doesn’t think she can ever possibly live up to her predecessors’ reputations. Not only did she screw up by accidentally getting infected by a spirit, but she’s nowhere near as strong or resourceful or charismatic as the water Avatar that came before her. Nova is essentially the complete opposite of Korra, and she hates that about herself. Her predecessor dealt with Harmonic Convergence, orchestrated and supervised the return of the airbenders, and continued to bring peace to the world in the aftermath of Kuvira’s harsh rule.

  • Nova's Animal Companions: Mizu (Snow Leopard Lynx, big enough to ride like Naga), Kaze (air bison), Umi (flying lemur)

  • Spirit blighting isn’t actually as uncommon as some people think, considering the human and Spirit World have been coexisting and reintegrating with one another since Korra opened the portals and made it possible for them to inhabit the human world and vice versa.

  • It is typically much rarer for humans to willingly enter the Spirit World on a whim; such travel is usually reserved for individuals that are seeking something specific from the realm or undergoing some form of spiritual training.

  • The Nomads at the fully restored Air Temples are the most knowledgeable about the Spirit World, followed closely by any spiritual advisers or devotees belonging to the other nations.

  • Alongside the triumphant and prosperous return of the Air Nation, plenty of airbenders and their families also choose to live in communities separate from the Air Temples and don’t necessarily participate in the same lifestyle as those that choose to train and dedicate themselves to the standard Air Nomad lifestyle.

Scepter 4 SweetheartsPost-S4 Verse
Nova is a Strain who lost her parents in the Kagutsu Crisis when she was very young. She was saved by the Slate and it granted her Strain powers, which also happened to alter her physical appearance. Her abilities include being part cat (other than her cat traits she can land on her feet fairly reliably, purr, hiss, etc.) and water manipulation in all forms (solid, liquid, and gaseous states.) She was able to avoid capture/detainment by the various Strain policing organizations for most of her life until Scepter 4 finally caught up with her. Despite her status and situation, the Blue King saw potential in her, and instead of treating her strictly as a criminal invited her to become a member of the Blue Clan. She was assigned to be trained under Saruhiko Fushimi, a position that didn’t seem like it was going to work out at first, but over time she was able to prove herself as a capable officer and Clansman.
Pre-S4 Verse
Following the same basic bio as above, this verse chronicles Nova's introduction to Fushimi before he left HOMRA. Making her way in the world in the aftermath of the Kagutsu Crisis, she found herself drawn to various illegal Strain groups in the city's underground; allegedly the only people who could really understand her position or offer her any aid. Unfortunately, over time she was conditioned to allow said parties to take advantage of her and her abilities, finding herself trapped in a seemingly endless cycle of exploitation and bombarded with reminders that she had nowhere else to turn. During an attempt to save a group member that'd been captured by one of the city's seedy Strain test facilities, she was almost apprehended herself by the scrambling Scepter 4 forces that appeared on the scene. Barely managing to escape with the help of one of the acting Red Clansmen at the time, Saruhiko Fushimi, he ended up running into her again by chance a few evenings later. Witnessing firsthand some of the unpleasantness she was seemingly forced to endure on a daily basis, he offered her temporary and conditional refuge in the apartment he was sharing with his friend. Wary to trust any non-Strains, and a Clansman at that, she cautiously agreed, swayed by the act of protection he'd previously offered her.

Thief of my heart

Post-Persona Verse
Nova was a fan of the Phantom Thieves back during the original peak of their popularity. After they vanished from the public eye and their existence was slowly erased from the minds of most of the people that had known them, her memories of them faded as well. A few years passed and she finally managed to arrange a trip to visit Japan, a dream she’d always longed to make a reality. While staying in Tokyo she has an encounter with the Metaverse and receives the mysterious reality bending app on her phone. Through a series of complicated events she comes into contact with the Phantom Thieves and discovers that she has the potential to become a new persona user. Matters become even more complicated when it comes to light that she has a Palace and its instability is mounting. She remains mostly unaware of the gravity of this situation in order to prevent her Palace’s deterioration from speeding up, although the Thieves make it a priority to dismantle it as soon as possible.
Codename: WitchPersona(s): Morgan (first tier), Circe (second tier), Modron (third tier)Pre-Persona Verse
Essentially the same bio as above, this verse involves Nova's introduction to the Thieves in a slightly less straightforward way. Still saved by Joker in the Metaverse when she's accidentally transported there by the app, she doesn't become aware of his identity as Ren in the real world as quickly as she does in the "main" verse. The central purpose of this set up is to provide more opportunities for me to experiment with some secret identity shenanigans and significant character development before many of the big, groundbreaking reveals and events take place.

Arcane Attraction

A mage who was born and raised in Rippletide, she and Tressa are practically sisters. While messing around with some complicated magical texts when she was younger, she got carried away and caused an accidental transformation that enchanted her with cat traits. She has yet to find a way to reverse the effects, since transformation magic of this kind is rare and the method to produce it successfully is still essentially unknown. Her parents allowed her to continue studying magic as long as she promised to use her knowledge to look for a way to cure herself, but she pours most of her time into teaching herself basic healing and water elemental magic, which are her preferred disciplines. She meets Cyrus in the middle of her travels around Orsterra with Tressa, and he becomes intrigued by the results of her magical accident. He agrees to provide her some training in the magical arts in return for her allowing him to study her condition. He leaves Atlasdam when the girls decide to continue their journey heading towards the Frostlands.

The Only Exception

Beast Human Verse
Nova is an Enfelid rogue that lived most of her life in the outskirts of Arenscura, often sneaking into the city to pilfer materials or other goods necessary for survival, such as food and clothing. Born with a physical mutation that makes her look even more feline than the typical Enfelid, she also had her horn forcibly removed by bandits who wanted to see if they could use it for magical experiments when she was young. Due to this tragic event she struggles to access the elemental magic that has been traditionally passed down in most Beast Human tribes through the generations; water is her only strong suit.
After she was attacked and her horn was removed she wandered around on her own for a while, adjusting to this bleak and isolated way of life. She was eventually imprisoned after getting caught for petty thievery, and her unique appearance attracted the interest of Arenscura's ruler, Rae Sangyun, who decided to give her a chance to hone her skills and practice healing focused magic in the palace. Transferred into the care of Lord Rae's most revered general, an Encanid by the name of Desair, she struggled to find a place for herself between her difficulties in mastering magic and Desair's personal, deep seated grudge against Enfelids such as herself. In time, however, the two find that they have much more in common than they originally thought...and perhaps can even find it in themselves to appreciate one another on better terms.Immortal Faerie Verse
An immortal faerie who's appearance resembles Beast Humans more than her fellow immortals. Although she has never truly adjusted to nor attempted to live among mortals due to a concern of them rejecting or fearing her, she's always been intrigued by them, and doesn't resent them in the same way many other immortals that have been trapped in the mortal realm do. She specializes in elemental magic, again much like Beast Humans, but as an immortal she also lacks a vulnerability to death and injury and can see through lies and falsehoods into the depths of an individual's heart.
While exploring the outskirts of Arenscura one day, taking advantage of being able to observe the citizens from afar, she's discovered by the city's top general, who she quickly takes a liking to. Despite his initial reluctance, the faerie's enthusiasm and sincerity manage to sway Desair's heart and convince him to let her stay in the palace in order to examine and experience what mortal life is like up close. Smuggling her in by the skin of his teeth, he succeeds in keeping her existence a secret for a short time until Lord Rae discovers the truth that his general has been harboring an immortal within the palace walls.Although Desair expects to face some kind of admonishment or punishment for this reckless act of deception, Lord Rae instead finds it amusing that his adopted son managed to gain the favor of an all knowing, all powerful immortal, seemingly on a whim. Although she initially fails to perceive things through anything more than the narrow lens of an immortal's point of view, Nova comes to appreciate, experience, and understand mortals and their way of life on a level she once found impossible to fathom, especially in the Overworld and Underworld. As she adapts to this unique new lifestyle, she also notices the standards of her thoughts and emotions beginning to shift, learning how to laugh and cry and love in a way most immortals would scoff at...but she only finds her heart capable of longing for some measure of that love to be returned.Note - There are 4 types of immortals in Carciphona lore: angels, elves, faeries, and mermaids. I started playing around with the idea of Nova being some type of immortal a while ago, and I remembered that Cat Sith's exist as "cat faeries" in Celtic mythology, although I don't believe they're considered faeries by modern standards by any means. Regardless, I decided to exploit that as a loophole to excuse how she could retain her feline attributes and still fall within the boundaries of canon lore...even if they're stretched so thin she barely manages to fall within them at all. It was just something I wanted to explain, since I did decide what type of immortal she'd be with some degree of foresight and canon compliance in mind...but ultimately I just liked the idea of Desair stumbling upon this immortal and her falling in love with him, while she remained ultimately the same anyway because I'm so attached to her design.

A young woman whose father was involved with the bootlegging business in Chicago. He died as a result of his work, and she and her mother moved houses but continued living in the city. Nova decided she wanted to get away for a bit after all that had happened started taking a toll on both she and her mother. Through the underground grapevine she ended up catching wind of the Lackadaisy speakeasy and decided to embark to St. Louis to investigate. When she arrived, she informed the management of who she was (and her bootlegging connections) and applied to be a waitress/cashier at the Little Daisy Cafe. Poor Unfortunate Souls

A black cat demon with starlight in her hair and fur, Nova is inexplicably drawn to the sound of a particular demon's voice from the moment she encounters it through his radio broadcasts. Unbeknownst to them (as a result of minor amnesia that afflicted them both), they knew each other when they were alive, although not on the most amicable of terms. While barely managing to avoid being captured or assaulted by the myriad of other stronger demons that stalk the streets, Nova regularly listened to Alastor's radio broadcasts during her first year in Hell. Motivated by the unnatural tug of familiarity she felt every time she heard his voice, she decided to try to find work at an establishment he frequented with the hope that she'd run into him and maybe even come to understand why she was so drawn to him in the first place. She managed to accomplish that goal by getting a job as a performer at Mimzy's club (with the help of a friend that was already employed there), and things simply developed from there. She acts as Alastor's familiar that essentially completes any task she's given, from reconnaissance to whatever dirty work he may require (keeping tabs on his enemies, tracking down victims, “taking care of them” if he so desires.) She develops a reputation as his shadow, and whenever they’re in public she tends wrap herself around his shoulders or stand on them in her cat form to add to his intimidation factor. She also has minor teleportation and shadow manipulation abilities, and she can produce a stardust-like substance that confuses her targets and makes them hallucinate for a short period of time.

Business Partners

Nova is an enterprising young cat who works under Redd. She's not necessarily involved with the explicitly illegal side of things, but she's always been willing to overlook those aspects of the business for the benefits of getting to travel around and experience the world with him. She stumbled upon and ending up taking Tom Nook's deal to undertake founding and maintaining a successful community on a previously uninhabited tropical isle. While the task was undeniably daunting at first, the allure of the rewards and general sense of accomplishment that was sure to come with even simply attempting such an endeavor was too great for her to turn down. In the midst of her new island adventures, she came into contact with another young cat named Raymond who also happened to be looking for a change of scenery, something to shake up his previously monotonous daily routine, and instantly found herself smitten with him. Between his own inspiring sense of enthusiasm and the support that he (along with her other new island friends) offered in building this little piece of paradise up from scratch, they both rose to face the unique challenge together, and found themselves growing inexplicably closer in the process.

Affectionate Apparition

A young cat spirit who just happened to stumble upon and enter the halls of Kamome Academy...which was probably her first mistake. Not long after she found herself wandering the unfamiliar maze of the seemingly innocuous school, she was attacked by a gang of nasty spider spirits with a mean streak and a taste for torment. Spiders being one of the creatures she hates most in general, she'd all but surrendered to her untimely demise when an unexpected third party stepped in to deter them and offer her temporary shelter in his library. The arrangement turned out to not be so temporary, however, and although Nova was wary to trust him at first, it didn't take long for her to warm up to the generally soft spoken spider ghost that so casually changed the course of her fate that day. Both indebted to him for saving her and actually quite attached to him despite the circumstances, she decided to serve him as a familiar of sorts. Aside from keeping him company, she also does small tasks for him and overall helps him run and maintain the supernatural side of the library over which he presides. She is unaware of the true nature of her existence, a result of the minor amnesia that she mysteriously suffers from, including the fact that her circumstances were actually influenced by another mischievous School Wonder that happened upon her the day she arrived in these haunted halls. The truth of her past is recorded in the pages of a book that also resides in a certain library, hidden away from prying eyes. Whether or not she'll ever manage to read those pages herself is a matter that has been tampered with by means beyond her control. (Or, less cryptically put, Tsuchigomori hid it so she can't find it and replaced it with a book about the lore of cat spirits. But, unfortunately for him, no matter the size or shape of whatever book he chooses to fill that spot, none of them ever manage to fill the space quite right.)

Something to Live for

Despite the assumed limited extent of Edgar Allan Poe’s ability, the Guild conducted experiments to determine if he could materialize things from his writings rather than just drawing people into them. Nova is the personification of the black cat from the short story “The Black Cat," although she doesn’t really have anything to do with or involve any further reference to the original story besides being a black cat.She doesn’t have an ability outside of being able to transform into an actual black cat, and although she has all the senses and appearance of a human, she doesn’t bleed (if she suffers an injury black smoke leaks from the wound) and she can’t age/die (unless Poe dissipates her…or she comes into contact with a specific separate variable she couldn’t possibly account for :3c) She was abused/tested on to determine the parameters of her existence, what she can and can’t do, and she’s fairly unlikely to be destroyed outright because she’s the first and only experiment to manifest and continue to exist in such a stable state. Naturally, the Guild isn’t sure Poe will be able to pull off that kind of feat again. He does continue to try, although she remains his only successful creation for the foreseeable future, and although she can’t do much at least she’s an immortal lackey they can employ to do their bidding for them. She's first introduced to the Agency when she accompanies Poe on one of his outings to deliver a new mystery to Ranpo. Inspired by the much more positive atmosphere the gifted individuals seem to have there and the fair treatment they receive, she grows to resent the shallowness of her existence and the narrow precipice on which she’s “so graciously” permitted to exist. Not really having anything else to lose outside of her life, she decides she wants to experience at least some measure of what life has to offer before she’s inevitably discarded whenever Poe manages to perfect the manufactured mutation of his ability. She gets along well with Atsushi at first (since he's so approachable and they have the feline thing in common) but keeps her distance from Dazai after being informed that he could end her life with one touch, since she does simply exist as an extension of someone else's ability.

Star Crossed

Nova is a young woman who was transformed by the influence of the mysterious, enigmatic Gate, existing as an anomaly outside of the categories of a fully fledged Contractor, a stoic Doll, or a regular human. Her transformation comes with some interesting caveats, as most strange circumstances and events surrounding the Gate tend to. Despite the alteration of her physical appearance, her nonhuman/supernatural traits are only visible to other individuals who also happen to have been significantly influenced or impacted by the Gate, i.e. Contractors and Dolls. To regular/mundane people she appears as a regular human. These traits become more visible to those who were previously unable to notice them the closer she gets to the Gate due to the increasing influence of its effects. She initially has all the abilities that can be expected of the typical catgirl, as well as being able to turn into a black cat herself; the starry accents of her hair/fur remain visible in her cat form, but again, only to those who have been significantly affected by the Gate. Her sudden and inexplicable transformation didn't impact her life too significantly at first, although once she inevitably learned more about the existence of Contractors and the like, she started to suspect and even expect that she'd inevitably be roped into more severe Gate related shenanigans one day; it was only a matter of time, especially considering Contractors/Dolls/etc. are the only individuals that can notice her abnormalities at a glance.Cue her introduction to a certain seemingly innocuous young man that her good (if not slightly eccentric) friend Kiko points out to her one afternoon after excitedly sharing her mildly concerning preoccupation with him. Nova decides to intervene on behalf of her friend and manages to convince him to go out with Kiko at least once, oblivious to (or perhaps purposefully tamping down) her own initial interest for the sake of her friend. Little does she know that he just so happens to be one of the individuals that can see her for what she truly is, although until her existence expressly becomes his problem, Hei decides to let this particular observation slide and not reveal his own identity unless it becomes absolutely necessary--if such drastic measures become necessary at all.Of course, much like Nova suspected when all this weird stuff first started cropping up around her, she ends up getting involved with and making the proper acquaintance of the man feared as the Black Reaper; the terrifying rumor of an infamous assassin that even managed to leak into mainstream society, despite the attempts by the powers that be to keep the existence of Contractors and the like hidden from the blissfully ignorant public.
